Green Engineering Appointed as Consultants for 400kV SPT Hunterston Substation Project

Green Engineering (GE) are proud to announce their appointment as consultants providing engineering and management services for a major 400kV Scottish Power Transmission (SPT) project at Hunterston Substation.

This prestigious project involves close collaboration with SP Transmission to ensure that all aspects of design and construction achieve full utility compliance for adoption within the transmission network. GE’s appointment underlines the company’s growing reputation for technical excellence and its ability to deliver complex, high-voltage infrastructure in accordance with rigorous SPT, National Grid, and DNO standards.

Project Scope and Responsibilities

Green Engineering’s role covers a broad range of engineering and management disciplines, including:

  • Survey Co-ordination: Managing topographical and geotechnical investigations to validate design assumptions and ensure accurate data capture across the substation footprint.

  • Platform Construction Design: Providing civil and structural design input for the new substation platform to meet the demanding stability and access requirements of 400kV infrastructure.

  • Drainage Design and Compliance: Developing surface water and foul drainage systems aligned with SPT and SEPA standards, ensuring effective water management and resilience during operation.

  • User Enabling Works (Appendix F Compliance): Ensuring that all works meet Appendix F enabling requirements, facilitating future utility connection and adoption without modification or delay.

Supporting Energy Transition Through Battery Integration

The Hunterston Substation works are a critical enabler for a new 400MW / 800MWh (2-hour) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), one of the largest of its kind in the UK. Once complete, the facility will play a key role in supporting grid stability, renewable integration, and energy flexibility within Scotland’s rapidly evolving power network.

By combining in-depth technical knowledge, project management capability, and strong stakeholder engagement, Green Engineering are helping Scottish Power Transmission deliver infrastructure that supports the UK’s journey toward a low-carbon, resilient energy future.

Excellence in Utility and EHV Infrastructure

As an Independent Connection Provider (ICP) with extensive experience across 132kV–400kV networks, Green Engineering continue to demonstrate their expertise in primary engineering, civil design, protection and control, earthing, and construction management. The company’s proactive collaboration with utility partners ensures that every project achieves full technical acceptance and long-term operational reliability.
